I feel the most accepted theory is that when the Cotopaxi volcano was activated in 1742,2 the inhabitants of the city of Latacunga and its surroundings, led by Gabriela de Quiroz, asked the Virgin of Mercy for protection, and named her "Lawyer and Patrona del Volcán "3 and they promise to hold an annual party in her honor, as a thank you. This festival was held on December 9 with the appointment of two priostes, "one of the whites and the other of the sooty ones."

Another theory places the main origin of the Black Mama in the parties organized by the blacks (brought there in colonial times to work in the mines) from the Sigchos area, to celebrate their liberation from slavery; This occurred in the mid-nineteenth century, when General José María Urbina, after assuming the presidency, decreed the abolition of slavery. The blacks considered that this fact had occurred thanks to the intervention of the Virgen de la Merced, and instituted this festival as a tribute in her honor.

For the year 1963, residents of the center of the city of Latacunga, pay attention to this festival and decide to represent it through a parody, together with the festivities to commemorate the independence of the city, in the month of November.5 This representation receives support from citizens and later from the municipal council, so after a few years, the Municipality of Latacunga institutionalizes the festival, organizing the November edition since then. Thus, since then, two editions of the Black Mama have coexisted each year, the original edition, held in September, and the November edition, official.
